Tiratricol (TRIAC)
Tiratricol (3,3',5-triiodothyroacetic acid, TRIAC) is a naturally occurring metabolite of T3 with high affinity for thyroid receptor beta. Clinically used in thyroid hormone resistance and MCT8 deficiency, it is used in bodybuilding as a fat-loss agent claimed to spare the heart relative to T3.
01 Overview
TRIAC is the acetic-acid analogue of triiodothyronine and acts as a thyromimetic with a short half-life and preferential activity at TR-beta receptors, which mediate lipid and metabolic effects more than cardiac ones. It has genuine clinical roles in resistance to thyroid hormone and in Allan-Herndon-Dudley syndrome.
In the cutting context it is dosed for its thermogenic and lipolytic action. Its rapid clearance means users split doses through the day. Despite claims of cardiac sparing, supraphysiologic dosing still suppresses TSH and can cause thyrotoxic symptoms.
02 Mechanism
Binds thyroid hormone receptors with a preference for TR-beta, driving transcription of metabolic and lipid genes and suppressing TSH; the beta preference gives a lower cardiac-to-metabolic effect ratio than T3.
