Ractopamine
Ractopamine is a beta-adrenergic agonist used as a livestock feed additive to increase lean muscle and reduce fat in pigs, cattle and turkeys. It is not a human medicine; human data are limited to a small pharmacology study and toxicology. Many countries and the EU, China and Russia ban residues in meat over safety concerns, while the US and Canada permit its use in food animals.
01 Overview
Ractopamine is a phenethanolamine beta-agonist marketed as a growth-promoting repartitioning agent (Paylean for pigs, Optaflexx for cattle). Fed in the final weeks before slaughter, it shifts nutrient use toward lean muscle deposition and away from fat, improving carcass leanness and feed efficiency. It acts predominantly on beta-1 and beta-2 adrenergic receptors in muscle and adipose tissue.
It is not approved or intended for human use. The human evidence base is thin: a single small oral pharmacology study documented cardiovascular effects (raised heart rate and palpitations) in volunteers, and it is these cardiovascular concerns, plus incomplete safety data, that underlie the divergent international regulation. Its inclusion here is as a beta-agonist repartitioning agent of the same pharmacological family as clenbuterol, not as a compound with a human use case.
02 Mechanism
Beta-adrenergic agonist (beta-1 and beta-2) acting as a nutrient-repartitioning agent: raises cyclic AMP in skeletal muscle and adipose tissue to increase protein accretion and lipolysis, increasing lean mass and reducing fat in livestock.
