Panax Ginseng (Korean/Asian Ginseng)
Panax ginseng is an adaptogenic root standardised to ginsenosides, with the broadest evidence base among ergogenic botanicals for erectile function, fatigue and mild cognitive effects. It has fairly good human data for erectile dysfunction and subjective energy, but its reputation as a direct testosterone booster is weakly supported.
01 Overview
Ginsenosides are thought to enhance nitric-oxide-mediated vasodilation (supporting erectile function), modulate the HPA axis and provide antioxidant and immune effects. Meta-analyses support a modest benefit of Korean red ginseng for erectile dysfunction, and there is reasonable evidence for reduced fatigue and small cognitive benefits; effects on serum testosterone in humans are inconsistent.
Users take standardised extract for energy, endurance, libido and general wellbeing, often as a long-standing staple rather than a modern 'T-booster'. It is generally well tolerated. Stimulatory side effects (insomnia, jitteriness, raised blood pressure) can occur, and it interacts with anticoagulants and some antidiabetic and antihypertensive drugs.
02 Mechanism
Ginsenoside-rich adaptogenic root that enhances nitric-oxide-mediated vasodilation, modulates the HPA stress axis and provides antioxidant and immunomodulatory effects.
03 Dosing
| Tier | Dose | Route | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standardised extract | 200–400 mg/day | Oral | Extract standardised to ~4-7% ginsenosides. |
| Korean red ginseng (ED trials) | 900–3000 mg/day | Oral | Higher whole-root doses used in erectile-dysfunction studies. |
04 Effects
| Effect | Magnitude | Evidence | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Improved erectile functionMeta-analyses support Korean red ginseng for erectile dysfunction versus placebo. | modest | Clinical | |
| Reduced fatigue / improved energyTrials show reduced fatigue and improved subjective energy and wellbeing. | modest | Clinical | |
| Inconsistent testosterone effectHuman data on serum testosterone are mixed and unreliable. | small / inconsistent | Observational |
05 Side effects
| Effect | Severity | Frequency | Evidence | Countermeasures |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Insomnia / overstimulationDifficulty sleeping, restlessness or nervousness, especially with later dosing. | Mild | Common | Observational | |
| Blood-pressure / glucose changesCan raise or lower blood pressure and affect blood glucose, complicating medicated patients. | Moderate | Medication-dependent | Observational | |
| Anticoagulant interactionMay reduce the effect of warfarin and affect antiplatelet activity. | Moderate | Interaction | Observational |
