N-Ethylpentylone (bk-ethyl-K, ephylone) is a 3,4-methylenedioxy cathinone with a pentyl side chain and N-ethyl group, giving a potent, unusually long-lasting stimulant profile. It gained notoriety around 2017-2018 for clusters of hospitalisations and deaths in several countries where it was sold as "MDMA" or "molly."
No controlled human studies exist. It is documented through outbreak toxicology and forensic analysis. Its long half-life relative to typical cathinones means insomnia, agitation and cardiovascular strain persist for many hours, and redosing readily leads to stimulant toxidrome.
