Mucuna pruriens (L-DOPA)
Mucuna pruriens (velvet bean) is a legume whose seeds contain natural L-DOPA, the dopamine precursor. It is used for libido, mood, fertility and as a supposed growth-hormone and testosterone aid. Its dopaminergic activity is real and it has genuine data in male infertility, but its use as a mainstream muscle/testosterone booster is only loosely supported.
01 Overview
The active constituent is levodopa (L-DOPA), which crosses into the brain and raises dopamine; dopamine in turn inhibits prolactin, and lower prolactin can favour testosterone and libido. Standardised Mucuna extract has been shown to improve semen parameters and hormonal profiles in infertile men, and it has been studied as an inexpensive levodopa source in Parkinson's disease.
Lifters take it for libido, mood, prolactin control (for example alongside 19-nor steroids) and claimed growth-hormone support, though the GH and muscle claims are weakly evidenced. Because it delivers real L-DOPA, it carries genuine dopaminergic side effects — nausea, dyskinesia at higher intakes and interactions with Parkinson's and psychiatric medication — so it is more pharmacologically active than most herbal boosters.
02 Mechanism
Seed extract rich in L-DOPA that is converted to dopamine in the CNS, suppressing prolactin and supporting libido, mood and fertility, with weak claims of growth-hormone stimulation.
03 Dosing
| Tier | Dose | Route | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standardised extract | 300–500 mg/day | Oral | Extract standardised to ~15-20% L-DOPA; often taken before bed or workouts. |
| Higher / fertility dosing | 5000 mg/day | Oral | Whole-seed-powder doses (~5 g) used in male-fertility studies contain lower L-DOPA density. |
04 Effects
| Effect | Magnitude | Evidence | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Improved semen parameters / fertilityTrials in infertile men show improved sperm count, motility and hormonal profile with standardised seed powder. | moderate | Clinical | |
| Prolactin suppression / libidoDopaminergic activity lowers prolactin, supporting libido and mood. | modest | Observational |

| Nausea and GI upsetNausea and vomiting, the classic dopaminergic and levodopa side effect. | Mild | Common | Clinical | |
| Dyskinesia / agitation at high dosesInvoluntary movements, restlessness or insomnia can occur with large L-DOPA intakes. | Moderate | High-dose | Observational | |
| Drug interactionsCan interact with Parkinson's medication, MAO inhibitors and antipsychotics. | Moderate | Medication-dependent | Clinical |
