Midazolam (Versed)
Midazolam is a short-acting, water-soluble benzodiazepine used mainly for procedural sedation, anaesthesia induction, and acute seizure control. Though usually given parenterally or buccally in hospital, an oral form exists; it carries strong sedation, amnestic effects, and respiratory depression risk.
01 Overview
Midazolam enhances GABA-A signalling with a rapid onset and short duration, making it ideal for procedural sedation, pre-medication, and status epilepticus. Its water solubility at low pH allows convenient parenteral and mucosal administration.
Dependence is less of a concern with the brief procedural use it is designed for, but tolerance and withdrawal can occur with prolonged infusion (for example in intensive care). Its most important acute hazards are pronounced anterograde amnesia and respiratory depression, which is markedly potentiated by opioids and alcohol.

Positive allosteric modulator of the GABA-A receptor with rapid onset; produces sedation, amnesia, anxiolysis and anticonvulsant effects.
