01 Overview
Matrixyl (palmitoyl pentapeptide-4, formerly palmitoyl pentapeptide-3) is a fragment of type I collagen conjugated to palmitic acid to aid skin penetration. It is a 'matrikine' signal peptide proposed to prompt fibroblasts to increase collagen, elastin and glycosaminoglycan production, mimicking the skin's own repair signalling.
Controlled topical studies, including some vehicle-controlled work, report modest reductions in wrinkle depth and improved skin texture over weeks to months. As a topical cosmetic it has low systemic exposure, and its main practical issues are mild local irritation and modest, gradual effects.
