Ethylphenidate
Ethylphenidate is a close analogue of methylphenidate (Ritalin) and an active metabolite formed when methylphenidate and alcohol are co-used. As a research chemical it is a dopaminergic stimulant reported to have strong redosing potential; insufflation has been linked to local tissue and vascular injury.
01 Overview
Ethylphenidate is the ethyl ester analogue of methylphenidate. It occurs in vivo as a minor transesterification metabolite when methylphenidate is taken with ethanol, and separately became a widely sold 'legal high' stimulant, particularly in the UK during the early 2010s.
User reports emphasise a compulsive urge to redose, especially when insufflated, and injecting-drug harms were documented among people who used it heavily. Controlled human data is minimal; its pharmacology is inferred from methylphenidate and limited receptor studies.
02 Mechanism
Inhibits reuptake of dopamine and noradrenaline by blocking their transporters, like methylphenidate, but with a somewhat greater noradrenergic-to-dopaminergic ratio.
