Epithalon
A synthetic tetrapeptide (Ala-Glu-Asp-Gly) developed in Russia and promoted for anti-aging via claimed activation of telomerase and lengthening of telomeres. The human evidence comes almost entirely from a small number of older Russian studies by its originators; independent replication is lacking and the telomerase claims are widely disputed.
01 Overview
Epithalon (Epitalon) is a synthetic peptide based on epithalamin, a pineal gland extract studied by Vladimir Khavinson and colleagues in St Petersburg. It is marketed to slow aging, improve sleep and lengthen lifespan, with the headline claim that it activates telomerase and rebuilds telomeres — a claim drawn from in-vitro and small human reports from the originating group.
The honest picture: the supportive human studies are decades old, small, and have not been independently replicated to modern standards; several were not blinded or controlled in ways Western reviewers accept. The telomerase/telomere-lengthening claim in particular is disputed and not established in mainstream literature. There is no modern pharmacokinetic or long-term safety dataset, and it is sold only as a research chemical.
02 Mechanism
Proposed to bind gene-promoter regions and to activate telomerase, thereby maintaining telomere length, alongside effects on melatonin and circadian regulation via the pineal axis. These mechanisms are asserted mainly by the originating research group and are not independently confirmed.
