Dimethandrostanol (Dymethazine)
An azine-linked dimer of methasterone (superdrol) sold as a "designer" oral supplement in the late 2000s. The azine bond cleaves in the body to release two active methasterone-like molecules. Linked in case reports to cholestatic liver injury.
01 Overview
Dimethandrostanol, better known as dymethazine or mebolazine (2α,17α-dimethyl-5α-androstan-17β-ol-3-one azine), is two methasterone units joined by an azine (=N–N=) bridge. The bridge acts as a slow-release linker: the body must first cleave it, after which the compound behaves essentially as methasterone. It appeared as a labelled ingredient in products such as "Super DMZ" and drew FDA enforcement.
Human evidence is confined to marketing-era anecdote and adverse-event case reports. A published case describes cholestatic jaundice in a user of a supplement containing dymethazine and methylstenbolone, consistent with the known hepatotoxicity of 17-alkylated DHT derivatives.
02 Mechanism
Prodrug dimer: azine cleavage yields two molecules of a methasterone-like 17α-methyl-5α-androstane androgen that agonise the androgen receptor. Being 5α-reduced it does not aromatise.
