BZP (Benzylpiperazine)
BZP (benzylpiperazine) is a synthetic piperazine stimulant historically marketed as a legal 'party pill', frequently combined with TFMPP to mimic MDMA-like effects. It produces amphetamine-like stimulation with a poor side-effect profile, including anxiety, insomnia and, rarely, seizures.
01 Overview
BZP emerged as a recreational stimulant sold openly in New Zealand and elsewhere in the 2000s, often as one component of 'party pills' alongside TFMPP. It is a comparatively weak stimulant relative to amphetamine, with users reporting euphoria, alertness and increased sociability.
Controlled human studies exist for BZP more than for most piperazines, generally showing amphetamine-like cardiovascular and subjective effects with a less favourable ratio of adverse effects to desired effects. Reports of seizures, agitation and toxicity, particularly in combination with other drugs, led to widespread scheduling.
02 Mechanism
Acts as a mixed dopamine and noradrenaline releaser and reuptake inhibitor, producing sympathomimetic stimulation broadly resembling amphetamine at lower potency.
