Baeocystin

Also known as Norpsilocybin · 4-Phosphoryloxy-NMT

Baeocystin is a naturally occurring analogue of psilocybin found in Psilocybe mushrooms, differing by having a single N-methyl group (it is the N-desmethyl analogue of psilocybin). It is thought to be a prodrug for norpsilocin. Its independent psychoactivity in humans is poorly established and rests largely on a small amount of historical self-experimentation.

01 Overview

Baeocystin is a minor tryptamine alkaloid co-occurring with psilocybin and psilocin in many magic mushroom species. Structurally it is the mono-methylated counterpart of psilocybin, dephosphorylating to norpsilocin (4-HO-NMT). Its contribution to the overall effects of mushrooms, and its potency when isolated, remain uncertain.

Human data are extremely limited; older self-reports suggested some activity while its independent potency is debated. It is of interest mainly as a natural constituent and research target rather than a standalone recreational compound.

02 Mechanism

Presumed prodrug for norpsilocin, a serotonin 5-HT2A receptor agonist; its own human pharmacology is not well established.
