AET (Alpha-ethyltryptamine)
Alpha-ethyltryptamine (AET) is the alpha-ethyl homologue of AMT. Like AMT it was marketed as an antidepressant (Monase) in the early 1960s before being withdrawn. It has stimulant, entactogenic, and mild psychedelic effects and monoamine oxidase inhibitory activity. It was withdrawn partly due to reports of agranulocytosis and later placed in US Schedule I.
01 Overview
AET was briefly sold as the antidepressant Monase but was withdrawn after cases of agranulocytosis (a dangerous drop in white blood cells) emerged. It shares the alpha-alkyl tryptamine profile of AMT: monoamine release, MAOI activity, and a long duration, with effects described as more stimulant and entactogenic than classically psychedelic.
The MAOI activity carries the same interaction hazards as AMT, and the historical association with agranulocytosis is a distinctive concern. AET was placed in US Schedule I in 1994.
02 Mechanism
Monoamine releaser and reuptake inhibitor with reversible monoamine oxidase inhibition and some serotonin receptor activity; the alpha-ethyl group slows metabolism and prolongs effects.
