5-MeO-AMT
5-MeO-AMT (5-methoxy-alpha-methyltryptamine) is a potent, long-acting synthetic tryptamine. It combines the alpha-methyl group (which confers stimulant and MAOI-like properties and metabolic resistance) with a 5-methoxy group. It is active at very small oral doses, has a narrow margin between active and toxic doses, and has been linked to serious poisonings and deaths.
01 Overview
5-MeO-AMT is structurally related to both alpha-methyltryptamine (AMT) and the 5-methoxy tryptamines. Its alpha-methyl substitution slows metabolism, producing an extended duration often reported at 12-18 hours or more, and confers monoamine-releasing and monoamine oxidase inhibitory activity. It is exceptionally potent, active in the low single-milligram range, which makes accurate dosing difficult and overdose easy.
The narrow margin between an active and a dangerous dose is the central safety concern. Combined with its long duration and MAOI activity, small dosing errors or interactions with serotonergic drugs can produce severe serotonin toxicity. Fatal and near-fatal cases have been reported. It should be regarded as one of the higher-risk research-chemical tryptamines.
