4-MEC (4-Methylethcathinone)
4-MEC is a synthetic cathinone stimulant that emerged as a mephedrone replacement after the 2010 UK ban on 4-MMC. It combines a mild entactogenic quality with a stimulant push, but human pharmacology is essentially uncharacterised and it is known mainly from seized-material analysis and non-fatal and fatal intoxication case reports.
01 Overview
4-MEC (4-methylethcathinone) is the N-ethyl, 4-methyl homologue of the cathinone family and appeared widely in "legal high" products around 2010-2012 as a direct substitute for mephedrone. Users report a shorter, sharper stimulant profile with weaker euphoria than mephedrone, encouraging compulsive redosing.
There are no controlled human pharmacokinetic or safety studies. Almost all knowledge derives from forensic seizure analysis, self-reports, and post-mortem toxicology where 4-MEC frequently appears alongside other stimulants, making its independent contribution to harm difficult to isolate.
02 Mechanism
Acts as a releasing agent and reuptake inhibitor at monoamine transporters, with in vitro data suggesting relatively greater potency at the serotonin transporter than many purely stimulant cathinones, producing mixed stimulant-entactogen effects.
